As hot air from the fire exits through the top of the fire pit a suction is created that draws fresh air down through the tunnel and into the base of the fire.
It was used to hide fire which could be seen for miles on the plains burn with minimal smoke as it provides enough oxygen to prevent most smoke and to burn in a manner that is incredibly efficient as fuel came scarcely on the plains.
